We’re only a few months removed from an enticing Harry Potter gaming rumor that still won’t quite go away. In the aftermath of Pokémon GO’s explosion to worldwide popularity, people started speculating about the idea of an imitation concentrating on the world of Harry Potter. It was specifically supposed to deal with the magical creatures from Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them. Even as late as November of last year, it was rumored that “Harry Potter GO” would be released by Niantic in early 2017. Sadly, we haven’t seen any concrete updates as of yet.

Now there’s another rumor going around, and it might be even more enticing for Potterheads. Back in April, following the collapse of Disney Infinity, word got out that Warner Bros. was hiring an RPG writer (or seemed to be, at least). More specifically, the company also requested that said writer be familiar with “British culture and grammatical presentation.” Warner Bros. has a lot of franchises under its umbrella, including DC Comics and characters, The Lord Of The Rings, the LEGO movies, Mad Max, and The Matrix. But only a few are distinctly tied to British culture, and The Lord Of The Rings already has some successful console series going. It’s by no means definite, but things narrow down pretty clearly to Harry Potter, which means we could get a wizarding world RPG in the near future.

Needless to say this would be welcome for millions of fans all over the world. It would also be particularly noteworthy given that Harry Potter-related gaming has begun to fizzle. Given that it’s one of the most popular entertainment franchises in the world, and has been kept alive by films, spinoffs, and new written material from JK Rowling it’s surprising that there are only a few recent examples of Harry Potter games.

Most notable among them was the title announced by Google for the Daydream VR headset. Google had partnered with Warner Bros. to produce a Fantastic Beasts tie-in that allows users to wave the Daydream controller like a wand and cast spells while looking through the headset at a world of magic. It isn’t a big, extensive game, but it’s certainly an exciting one in demonstrating a potential avenue for future Potter games.

On a slightly more obscure note, there’s also a recently designed internet slot reel that’s based on Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them. It’s not officially licensed material, so there’s no Warner Bros. tie-in and it’s called (somewhat cheekily) “Wintastic Beasts.” It’s still unquestionably a Harry Potter-themed game, even if it is unofficial. For those who like slot gaming it’s a fun, playful foray into a wizarding world atmosphere that should help keep you occupied while waiting for the real thing.

Aside from these two games there hasn’t been much new for Harry Potter fans. Even those two examples were more about the Fantastic Beasts spinoff than the original series. It’s clear that the public is still hungry for more Harry Potter material, and if Warner Bros. is working on a big RPG from this world, it’s almost guaranteed to be a hit.

All we can do now is wait and hope. The rumor regarding the writing hire is still fairly new, and that means that whatever game is in the works is still in the early stages. Furthermore, a Potter-related announcement could be more impactful as a total surprise than it would be as a gradually revealed process. That means the company has reason to keep things very quiet until there’s a trailer or a release date. Even so, it’s something to keep an eye on for the rest of the year.
